Discussion How to tell someone to shut up without telling them to shut up?

Like seriously, how? I'm dying here. orz

 

Just put on headphones. That's what I do. Like, I'd say something to end the discussion and put my earbuds on so they don't continue. If they still continue, I wait a while, take one off and ask "what?" Then they'll say it again and when they're done I'll put it back on. If they keep talking I take one off again and again ask "what?"....Just continue till they get the hint or get tired.

Its the way of the introvert.
If they get pissed and tell you to just listen, well, now you won't feel guilty about being angry back since they got angry first.

Since you're walking and talking, you could say you've gotta go to the bathroom and then when you come out if they are waiting for you like inside to come out, just be covering your stomach already and say you're not feeling good and gonna take a nap

Just play dead. Talkative people tend to get bored when their prey is showing no reaction or signs of life.

Joking aside, you can try pretending to be tired while being in a hurry about something (as if you really can't keep up with two things at once), maybe even fake a phone call or two, or use your laptop with a serious face, that usually works on my lil bro who's got more energy than a energy drink. If neither of these work, then I think telling them honestly that you're currently too tired to keep up with a conversation is good enough, and don't tell them to shut up, tell them that'll you talk to them later - they won't get upset this way.

 

how to tell shut up without being rude? although using headphones is a good thing, there are people who really couldn't tell so are they related to you or not? older, same age or younger kid?

Why don't you just tell them straight up to shut up? If you don't like them or what they bring, then telling them to shut up will get them to avoid you in the future as well. For me, if I don't want to tell a person to shut up, I'll I walk away. If you're already walking, sit down, and wait for them to sit down. Then get up immediately as they sit near you, and walk away. That should send a pretty clear message.
