Movie I just watched Incredibles 2.... (*Slight Spoilers*)

Yeah, there was a plot. There were characters, I think, and it was okay, I guess. There may have been a message about something, maybe?

But I made this thread to talk about something more important.

Lemme tell you about my OTP.

Violet x Voyd



Fair warning, I started out kinda weird and I only get more deranged the farther I go.

Some basic introductions:

Alright, so, viewers of either movie should be familiar with Violet Parr, the withdrawn, awkward daughter of the titular family. Her powers are invisibility and forcefields, indicative of her avoidant personality and her desire to keep other people away.


Voyd, or, as I prefer to call her, Karen (her real name), is a newly introduced hero in Incredibles 2. She is a ball of excitement, but perhaps a bit over-excitable because she devolves into an awkward mess in tense situations...or just when talking to people generally and her role model Elastigirl specifically. Her power is creating wormholes between locations, in a similar manner to the Portal series of games.

Anyhow, with that out of the way...

Karen and Violet are perfect for each other. Personality-wise, they've both clearly struggled with social anxiety; even if Violet immensely improved compared to how she was at the start of the first movie, the events of Incredibles 2 show that she's still somewhat predisposed to being an awkward dork. Stripping that away, though, Karen's upbeat nature and enthusiasm is the yang to Violet's moody, angsty yin. In the scene where they meet, there's a sort of awkward tension and yet mutual kinship between the two; one can easily imagine that they first bond over their mutual anxiety but as their interactions go on they find that they're highly compatible, deepening their friendship...or perhaps turning into something more.

Let's look at powers. Violet's forcefield is, by word of god, a symbol of the mental walls she builds to keep other people out. In all of her fights throughout both movies, enemies trying to break her shield have done so by attacking from the outside with massive force. All fights, that is, except for her fight with Voyd. Karen is the only character able to get inside the forcefield and pull Violet out of it. In other words, by the established symbolism, Karen is the only character able to bypass Violet's rejection of the world and also pull her away from those mental walls she keeps around herself. Karen is the only person who can make Violet feel comfortable!

Karen is pretty definitely gay, nearly beyond doubt. Her entire introductory scene is, to put it lightly, an allusion to coming out of the closet (as a superhero) because of her icon (Elastigirl/Helen Parr). To put it a little more heavily, Karen has this massive fangirl crush on Helen. Of course, there's been quite some speculation that Incredibles 2 hinted that Helen herself may have had some inclinations towards women, but having seen the film, I'm of the opinion that such speculation is spurious at best. In their interactions, Elastigirl is polite but overall dismissive of Karen. In fact, in their second interaction, Elastigirl literally brushes her off to go pursue the plot. On the other hand, near the end of the movie Violet seems to have a genuinely friendly interaction with Karen, showing Karen the respect that Violet's mother never did. One might imagine that some of Karen's overwhelming awe for Elastigirl might transfer to her progeny, Violet, but muted to the degree that while she still feels amazed to be talking to Violet she isn't transformed into the nervous wreck she is around Elastigirl. To put it another way, Karen finds in Violet an approachable reflection of her object of reverence.

Violet.....is attracted to Tony throughout the course of the two movies. However, Tony is a weak-willed fuckboi. Upon discovering Violet's superhero nature, his first reaction was to run away, only coming to regret it later on. He was more concerned by the legality of their existence than his relationship with Violet. Frankly, Violet and Tony will eventually drift apart and it'd be better for everyone (read: me) if Tony just disappeared from Violet's life. Maybe then, Violet would talk to Karen about her feelings, inadvertently planting a seed of trust and emotional vulnerability between them.

Of course, one might say that there's no evidence that Violet also swings that way. HOOO BOY. Dontcha know, in the first half of the 1900s, women would hand each other a violet to indicate that they were lesbian or bisexual. Incidentally, Violet and Voyd are the only living characters to appear in the series whose names start with the letter "V". The letter V itself resembles an upside down triangle, which can be widely recognized as an LGBT symbol. Two overlapping triangles, pink and blue, is a symbol of bisexuality, particularly the color purple that results from that overlap. Purple and violet are colors often conflated. Furthermore, Violet's suit is red and Karen's suit and hair are blue, colors that form purple upon their overlap. The two of them practically scream, "We were meant to be gay together!"

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to their relationship is age. At the time of the events of the films, Violet is 14, while Karen appears to be in her early twenties. However, such an age difference is ultimately not unbreachable. It's a fairly common phenomenon for LGBT youth be "brought into the fold" with an older partner; indeed, one of my own friend's first girlfriend was over 30 when she herself was 16. In any case, if Violet dates Tony for several years before she discovers he's not right for her, Violet and Karen may not even be illegal depending on local laws.

Naturally, they'll need a ship name. I'm thinking Voylet is pretty good. Karlet might work in a pinch. Vioren's probably not okay. Violoyd is just stupid.
