Spoiler: Book 3 (Ch. 12, 13, 14, & 15, Part 1)

Rose and her mom go to a shop to get a dress for Cassiax and Muriel’s wedding. At the dress shop, they run into Muriel who is looking at dresses. Rose tries to be nice to her, but Muriel feels guilty and thinks that Rose is mocking her for being happy while she was married to Maxim in her place. Rose wants to warn her about Cassiax, but Muriel runs away and leaves Rose.

Later Muriel goes to meet Rose at her house. Muriel comes to apologize to Rose, but Rose tells her that she doesn’t have to. Rose tries to warn her about Cassiax and his mistress and tells Muriel that life with him will make her unhappy. Muriel gets upset at her for insulting Cassiax and tells her that whatever happened between her and Cassiax did not matter to Muriel because she was going to become his wife. Muriel also tells Rose that she didn’t care if he has a mistress, and that she had only come to apologize but it looks like she doesn’t have to. She ends up leaving and tells Rose that she doesn’t have to walk her out.

At the wedding reception held before the wedding, Maxim and Rose show up. Everyone is excited to see them because of the rumors about Maxim and are completely surprised when they see that Maxim is a handsome young man instead of the ugly and decrepit old man the rumors painted him as. They were also expecting Rose to be depressed and sad, but she’s actually stunning and shines even brighter than how she was in Solstern.

Everyone watches Maxim and Rose go give their congratulations to Cassiax and Muriel. Maxim greets Cassiax’s father and the king pretends that he was close friends with Maxim’s father when both Cassiax and Maxim know how much their dads hated each other. Rose leaves to go see Helen, her friend from before she left Solstern (Helen is the friend who likes Hans and defended Rose at every social gathering after Rose left when people started gossiping about her in order to kiss up to Muriel). Maxim is with Count Jared (Rose’s father) and Count Jared looks like a proud father-in-law introducing his son-in-law to people. People are actually scared of Maxim and having Count Jared there makes it easier for people to approach him and make connections.

Meanwhile, the young ladies approach Rose and Helen. The girls that led the gossip about Rose in order to kiss up to Muriel, Eliza and Tracy, lead the pack. They come and start asking about Maxim, with one even calling his name affectionately. They say that if they had known what he looked like, they would have volunteered to go North too. One of them asks how Rose is doing in Helevant and she tells them that she enjoys it. They’re slightly disappointed because they all expected her to be miserable. Rose leaves the crowd to get air on the balcony. The balcony reminds her of when Cassiax pushed her to her death.

Cassiax has been staring at Rose the entire time and gets up to follow her. Muriel tries to get his attention but he never looks at her. He follows Rose out onto the balcony and doesn’t let her leave. Cassiax tells Rose that she won, and that she knew that if she went to someone else it would keep his attention. He asks her if she would come back to him if he forgives her. He thinks that Rose married Maxim while still loving him and that she only did it because she knew that it would drive him mad. Rose tries to leave and he grabs her wrist. Rose is scared of his eyes that are full of envy, greed, possession and twisted love.

Rose calls out for Maxim, and even with the music playing, Maxim can’t hear her but gets a strange feeling and goes to find Rose. When he comes up to the balcony, Rose tells Maxim that they have to leave because she isn’t feeling well. Maxim doesn’t see Cassiax because he’s hidden in the curtains and they leave. Maxim thinks that Rose is nervous from having to see Cassiax when she was originally supposed to marry him.

Meanwhile, Tulio is wandering the castle and criticizing the Solstern peoples' taste. He sees a couple being intimate in a hidden place and, thinking that the soldier was attacking a girl, goes and pulls them apart. He doesn’t know it, but he just pulled apart the newly divorced Princess Johannes and her ex-lover (the lover she had before being sent off to her political marriage). The ex-lover begs the princess to leave him alone before running away. Tulio realizes that the woman, who he assumes is a noblewoman or a maid, was the one attacking the poor soldier. The princess slaps Tulio in the face and berates him for interrupting her. Tulio calls her crazy and they bicker before he leaves. The princess decides that she wants to see him again.

At Cassiax and Muriel’s wedding, people pay more attention to Maxim and Rose than to the married couple. When walking down the aisle, Cassiax is looking at Rose and expecting her to be sad. Instead, Rose looks him in the eye and gives him a truly happy smile because she escaped him and his hell, and it wasn’t her who was marrying him. She felt a little bad for Muriel, but she did try to warn her. Sasha (Cassiax’s mistress) is also looking at Rose. She used to be jealous of her, but now she was just curious about her because just the mention of her name could enrage Cassiax.

The next day, Rose is in the mansion that her parents prepared for her and practicing the sword. A servant comes and tells her that Cassiax has come. Rose has to go greet him and Cassiax is thinking about how attractive she looks with a sword. He thinks that she used to be a naive and innocent girl but was now a mature woman. Cassiax talks to Rose and tries to reminisce with her, but Rose is disgusted. He acts friendly and lovingly towards her and Rose is trying to put off having to go invite him to the drawing room for tea and conversation when Maxim shows up. He hugs Rose and kisses her on top of her head and asks why Cassiax is there. Cassiax tells him that he’s visiting Rose, alluding that he has a history with her. Maxim jokingly tells Cassiax that since he’s married, he should be with his bride in the bedroom for at least three days. Cassiax replies that if his wife was as beautiful as Rose, he would keep her in the bedroom for at least a month. Maxim tells Cassiax that unfortunately, they can’t invite him to sit down because they have a busy schedule. Cassiax is annoyed but invites Maxim to a hunt he is hosting in a few days before leaving.

At the castle, Cassiax is changing when Muriel asks where he’s going again. He hasn’t visited her at all and left her alone on their wedding night, spending it with Sasha instead. Muriel is humiliated to have to say this in front of the servants. Cassiax tells her that just because she’s married she thinks she can talk to him however she wants. He tells her that he’s going hunting before he kills people and Muriel is terrified. Cassiax leaves and Muriel watches him from the window. She makes eye contact with Sasha, who’s waiting for Cassiax by the carriage. Sasha mockingly bows to her before Cassiax escorts her into the carriage. Muriel closes the curtains before tears of humiliation well. She thinks back to when Rose told her that marrying Cassix will make her unhappy.

Later, Rose and Maxim go to visit an old friend, named Ludwig, on his boat. He is a trader and Rose wants him to open a port in Helevant. She excitedly tells him that it would benefit their Helevant and Maxim thinks about how she referred to Helevant as theirs. Rose and Maxim run into Hans, who hasn’t shown up the entire duration of Rose’s visit. He and Maxim are extremely friendly with each other. After having dinner with her brother, Maxim, and Ludwig, Rose and Maxim go off alone to talk to each other. Rose wants to confess her love to him, and she starts off by mentioning that she saw him kiss her portrait. Maxim becomes serious before Rose blurts out that he could get germs from the picture. They talk and confess their feelings before starting to kiss. It starts to get hot and heavy before Rose tells him to stop because people will see them. Maxim picks her up and takes her to a cabin where they spend the night together.

Tulio is also with them on the boat and is wandering around. He finds a crazy lady throwing up over the boat and tells himself that he should just mind his own business. The crazy lady is the princess who’s throwing up and waiting for her maid to bring her water. It’s a combination of being drunk and seasickness. She accidentally nearly falls over when someone grabs her from behind. She sees that it's Tulio and immediately starts acting like a maiden in distress. The maid that was supposed to bring her water comes and the princess waves her away. The princess throws herself on Tulio and asks her “savior” to please walk her back to her room because she was too distressed to go back alone. In her head she’s thinking that she’s going to hold him captive for the night. Tulio is reluctant and still thinks that she’s insane but agrees to walk her back.

In the princess’s room, the princess starts crying and asking Tulio to drink with her because it’s “her birthday” and she was all alone. Tulio tells her that he’d only drink one drink with her but then ends up drinking a whole bottle. The next day he wakes up in bed with the princess and panics. The princess who’s still asleep begs for water, thinking that her maid is there, and Tulio pours her some before throwing his clothes on and running out the door. The princess wakes up to find the bed empty and thinks that Tulio is cute, because even as he was leaving he poured her a glass of water. She wants to see him again.

Meanwhile, Tulio is panicking and trying to hide from the princess. He wonders why Solstern boats are so slow to dock, and also thinks that Maxim didn’t notice his absence because he was also preoccupied.

Spoiler: Book 3 (Ch. 12, 13, 14 & 15, Part 2)

Rose wakes up alone and goes out to find Hans and Maxim together again. Rose ends up meeting an old teacher of hers. He used to be her art (?) teacher and is usually chased out of the houses he taught at because he’s attractive and either the wives or the daughters like him. He warns her about the king’s mistress and the suspicious rumors that follow her. She originally came into a marquis’s house to care for the wife, but then the wife died. Later on Madam Trisha (I think? I forgot her name) married the Marquis and the Marquis also died in a way similar to his wife. The daughter of the Marquis and first wife quietly entered a convent, and the teacher thinks that it's because Madam Trisha is a serial poisoner.

Rose decides to look into this later on because in her last life the mistress was very close to the king and Cassiax. She is in her father’s study trying to get a book when Maxim comes in. They discuss the hunt before they start getting intimate on the couch. Maxim tells Rose that he feels strange doing it in front of her ancestors, and Rose realizes that paintings of her ancestors are on the wall. She jokes that they’ve probably done much worse on the couch before kissing him.

At the palace, Madam Trisha witnesses the king’s doctor prescribing his medication. The medication can kill the king if the doses are given incorrectly, and before the doctor can give it to the maids, Madam Trisha rushes in and takes it. Nobody questions it since she’s his mistress, but Madam Trisha double checks with the doctor about the dosage and if accidentally overdosing would kill him. The doctor confirms that it would not kill him right away, but over time. She makes a big show about having to be careful with the medicine, but Madam Trish is extremely pleased. (Later on, when Cassiax argues with his father about Rose, Madam Trisha approaches him with a deal.)

Rose finds the doctor of the Marquis and basically blackmails him into revealing that Madam Trisha poisoned the Marquis family. He begs her to protect his family because he had gone into hiding to protect them. Rose tells him that she will if he testifies against Madam Trisha. After she goes home, Rose is notified that a man matching the description of the Marquis’s doctor was hung under a bridge. Rose realizes that they had somebody tailing him and now she would be scrutinized because she approached a man that had lived like he was dead.

Back in Helevant, Rishar (Tulio’s best friend and the man left behind in place of Maxim) is lured away and attacked. He realizes that the wife of the prime minister is plotting to overthrow Maxim while he is away. The assassin manages to stab him with a fatal poison and tells Rishar about who sent him because Rishar would die from the poison anyways. Rishar manages to kill all of the assassins but has been stabbed by the poisonous dagger. His viewpoint fades into black.

Rose and Maxim attend the hunt together. People are watching them even more closely now because they saw Rose and Maxim make out at the boat party. Rose and Maxim joke and flirt with each other, and Maxim takes Rose’s hand and starts biting it in public. The hunt soon begins and Maxim leaves. Rose watches him leave before being distracted by a bunny. She follows it into a secluded area before Cassiax reveals himself. He had been following her and assumed that she led him there so they could be alone on purpose. Cassiax tells Rose that he was going to let her live, but now she had to die. He had seen her and Maxim laughing together, and he was extremely pissed about it. Rose tries to look for a way to escape him.

The prime minister (Maxim’s uncle) hears about Rishar and realizes that his wife would have been behind it. He confronts her, only for her to tell him that since he’s her husband, he has to support her or else he would die too. She says that she’s doing it for their son (Maxim’s cousin) who was sent somewhere (or something, I don’t really remember if he was back with their tribe or what happened to him). The prime minister goes and looks at Rishar’s body with Freddy (the butler) and leaves in a panic. When he leaves, Rishar gets up from the table and tells Freddy to alert Maxim to the coup.

Maxim has also been ambushed by Cassiax’s soldiers. Cassiax had arranged the hunt to try and kill Maxim. Maxim realizes that the ambush means that Rose would also be in danger and escapes to go find her. Just when it looks like Maxim is going to be overpowered. Tulio comes and fights them off. Tulio is one of Helevant’s soldiers and realizes that something is wrong. With Tulio there, Maxim goes to find Rose and Cassiax. Cassiax tries to hold Rose hostage, but Rose escapes (I think she headbutts him but I don’t really remember) and Maxim stabs Cassiax.

Rose has to stop Maxim from killing Cassiax because she doesn’t want a war to start. They leave Cassiax only to hear about the coup in Helevant. Rose tells Maxim that she is staying in Solstern, but Maxim thinks it’s because she doesn’t want to be with him. They argue, and Maxim forces Tulio to stay as Rose’s guard before he angrily commands his soldiers to return to Helevant. He doesn’t tell Rose goodbye, and leaves with misunderstandings.

Cassiax returns to the palace in order to take care of his wound. He likes to beat his servants when he’s angry. He also is suspicious about Maxim leaving so abruptly and thinks that something is happening in Helevant. A servant comes in and tells him that he had received a letter from Rose Etoile. Cassiax gets excited because he remembers all of the love letters Rose used to send him, and wonders if she’s begging for forgiveness. He reads it, and Rose’s letter basically says

My husband might’ve stabbed you but you started it. Keep your mouth shut if you know what’s good for you (extremely paraphrased)

Cassiax is angry but realizes that he wouldn’t be able to reveal that he tried to ambush the king and queen of Helevant anyways. He had already argued with his father and made a deal with Madam Trisha (probably to slowly poison the king so he can take the throne) and wants to find out why Maxim left in such a hurry.

Spoiler: My clues to guessing Rishar and Tulio are a couple

Even if they fought like enemies every day, Rishar at that moment felt as if his heart was split in half and removed from his body. Tulio unexpectedly nodded with a childlike expression on his face. Since they started living together, they were never apart for that long.

“Go. The Lord is waiting for you.”

Tulio slowly turned away from Rishar with a disappointed face, perhaps regretting that he was leaving like this.

“Rishar. You know I like you, right?”

Tulio walked back and casually threw those words at him.

“Do you want to die?”

Thus, Rishar and Tulio finished greeting each other. A feeling deeper and more affectionate than that of the parting between two lovers arose from them. They fought every day, but now that they were going to be apart like this, it felt empty, as if they had lost an arm.

Rishar shuddered, trying to shake off the strange feeling, but Tulio was still waving his hand as he got on the horse.

 

So Rishar dies instead!! Whhyyyy!!??? Noooo!!! Let that damn rapist princess be the one shanked....
