I stopped reading Forty Millenniums of Cultivation a while back and would like to give it another shot. Li Yao had been stranded on a planet that hated space farers. He'd found a clan willing to work with him to get back into space if he built things for them, and all the clans were gearing up for some massive battle against demons or something that were about to hatch out of eggs.
