Actually i speak inter language translation possibility as a whole, not spesific to Jap-Eng.

@Mizura if you want a good translator, you can try gingersoftware premium windows version. As for the rewriter, you can use wordai.

I use google translate romaji function for almost a year now.
It works great, and I can understand almost everything..
I dont know any kanji, but I have a good knowledge on the vocabulary.
Welp, it doesnt feel like MTL at all when I read it.

Learning the language itself won't be a waste. You will one day feel grateful towards your past self for doing all those bothersome learning, just like me. Seriously, memorising all those kanji and vocabularies took a lot of efforts... grammar can be learned in just few months with diligent learning, so keep it up !

Horrible. Google translate is horrible. Especially for novels.
You can translate short sentences and spoken phrases but a lot of novels just don't translate.
Good luck with your Japanese studies.

I think systranet is better, but their website translation isn't working since last week.

Google Translate is a poor tool for translating Asian languages period, since a lot of context is lost and it's confused about even simple pronouns / lack thereof, not to mention it doesn't really understand complicated grammar.

It does much better with Western languages, or so I've found. English to French for example.
