    Hi all,
Qidan is hosting a novel called Lady Cultivator. I know the name is really cringey  but I wanted to give it a shot because the amount of translated novels with female MC who actually seriously cultivates instead of joining an OP harem is basically non-existent. And I'm actually really liking it so far. MC still has a kid-ish mentality, none of that scram-or-I'll-exterminate-you-and-your-clan, annoying shota personality or ice lady persona, but I reckon it has good potential. Anyone got any spoilers? Much appreciated.

(Also, this is my first time making a new thread :notlikeblob:, let me know if I missed out on anything)

I like this novel a lot, so much so that i mtlkd this after reading the first few translated chapters back then... unfortunately, just a heads up, the ending feels too incomplete... Really!! So after reading, you might feel frustrated as it feels that you need to read more...

As i mtl’d this a bit like a month or so ago, i’ll edit my post later for some clarifications after re-reading. But i’ll answer your questions...

    1. Yes there is a ML.
one of the known geniuses in their continent... he was her father's friend so there is a huge age gap b/w them, but considering that this is cultivation world, there aren't too much issue. He’s also the one that was searching for MC and her mother due to MC’s father’s last request.

    2. ML will accidentally discover this fact. Though her being female will be reavealed at #3’s answer..

    3.yes, she will leave, though
will become annexed by the stronger sect within their area because a cultivation family that’s in Yunwu sect will betray them for power. That family, is the family of one of MC’s batchmate, the one who refused to socialise with their group. Due to issues arising with this takeover, the “heir” of that family attacked MC and because MC killed him she had no choice but to escape with her uncle. Unfortunately, this crime was discovered by the sect so they were chased and that is when her being female was discovered. Though her close friend’s only discovered this after a long time and only after she met them individually, as she started to let herself be freely known as a female due to having a backing now.

    4. Not really her but just helping the Ye clan in the shadow. She does this by helping a Ye cultivator descendant that she discovered at her new sect... though, only that person, whom she treats as her nephew will know her as a Ye family descendant through her father, the rest of the family in the secular(mortal) world only knows that the she is a friend of Ye family. She masquerade as a friend of herself, meaning she introduced herself as knowing the daughter of the Ye family genius, which is her father, and as such decided to teach her nephew as a favor.. idr why she won’t tell the truth, maybe because she feels distant with them.

5.is Ye Jingwen the savior? The one who saved her from that lone cultivator who wanted to use her as a stove and the one who helped her find her uncle? If yes
he will appear again, but not as an avil person infact they will become close friends.. not as part of the really intimate friends MC will have in the end, but still a close friend.. the thing is, the issue they have is merely a misunderstanding of uncle which influenced MC but after clearing up the issue both apologised to each other for not being clear with their intentions that led to misunderstanding..
but it became a good thing because due to this ML fell in love with MC because in his POV he has no pedophilic tendecies so if the transfer went through and he looked after MC from childhood, he will not be interested to MC as he will always regard her as a child as opposed to knowing her personally when she’s already 17

6.there are, one close friend is one of the administrator in her new sect who became the head later in the novel but her real bestfriend is the apprentice of the continent’s #1 cultivator back then ( of course later in the story, her with her group of friends ohad overtaken the old powerful cultivators to become the strongest).. and that bestfriend was actually their enemy back then...

Actually, this is what i liked in this novel, even the side characters have dimension, the novel tells their story even the villains though of course the bulk of the novel still focuses on MC..

The specific names of ML and the sect, i’ll post later... hope this helps.. oh yeah, i mtl’d so if there is anyone is welcome to correct me... :blobsmilehappyeyes:

Edit: in fact, i strongly disagree with one of the reviews there the one who reasoned of her having her physique becoming a damsel in distress. In fact, that is so not happening, imo majority of the fight she is in she was one of the frontline fighter due to her skills, only when she was facing cultivators out of her league did she need protecting and that was because her cultivation technique is not appropriate with her physique so her progress is slow so in the start she might be protected but her knowledge in array always helps her.. and also when she decided to go into Tianwu mountain, she had to be protected as her cultivation isn’t really appropriate to venture there however she has no choice as that is the only chance she has to get her father’s bones. She didn’t go there with some half-ass reason overestimating herself so she needed someone to guide her as that place is very dangerous. So those times that she DID is because she has no choice but to fight due to critical reasons... you know, maybe i should review this just so people may not have misconception about MC...:blobthinkingsmirk:

Reviewer in question here. Please do balance my review with yours. I am mostly a reader of novels with male MCs, which is why my point of comparison is with those novels. I've edited my review to be clearer about that implicit comparison.

Our disagreement here comes from our different expectations of MCs.

Being the showy frontline fighter is normal for male MCs and it is not uncommon for them to even overpower cultivators supposedly out of their league. To make the comparison more fair, I used the example of A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality, where the MC stays low-profile but occasionally gets stuck under the thumb of more powerful cultivators who covet his secrets.

In male MC novels, the MCs usually get lucky with finding a way to escape or power himself out of such situation. In female MC novels, the MCs are more likely to get lucky with finding a man that can do the same for her. Both are types of plot armor that authors use to resolve the situation and there's nothing wrong with choosing the plot armor that your target audience prefers. To a reader of female MC novels, she may seem less of a damsel in distress than usual but to me, it's still obvious that she's one.

What I take greater issue with is in the latter type of plot armor being incompatible with the synopsis, which sets up this expectation of a strong independent female cultivator who don't need no man. It's like I was going to watch a film that's sold as a feminist story of a woman overcoming discrimination to rise to the top of her field, except it turns out her husband's patronage and connections actually got her through the most important roadblocks. That's what made me so disappointed.

Hey, can you spoil us about Qin Xi? He is one of the mc’s roommates in her first sect. Does He already know the Mc is a girl from the beginning? And what is his story?

I'm about to start an MTL of this since I'm tired of waiting for the translations. So far though, the things she is relying on have nothing to do with a love interest and either came from her ancestors or she got them herself.

Yeah definitely give it a try. I read Phoenix Destiny after discovering this novel, and I have to say while I do like Pheonix Destiny, Lady Cultivator is still better for me. I just like the way the plot progresses and the pragmatic personality of the MC.

You can just copy and paste the chinese name of the novel into google and there will be plenty of sites that host the novel.
    But try this one: http://www.quanben.io/n/yixiannanqiu/list.html
But personally, I find that mtl-ing a novel, especially a cultivation novel, decreases the enjoyment for the novel by like 50%. I tried to mtl this one, but it was just too hard made my brain hurt :notlikeblob: so I had to give up and just wait for translations.

That being said, I just mtl a few chaps now.

200- Tang Shen asks MC to bring him back with her to Kunwu. MC refuses, saying she does not want it to look like she has kidnapped the golden child of Bixuan court. TS has not asked his elders yet, he wanted to ask MC for her approval before he asked his elders. C thinks that if she leaves with him, the sisters who are in love with him will hate her, maybe even kill her with their swords.
201- speak of the devil. Two girls approach. I think one of them is the one that tried to get MC to sell her more pills under the table in the previous chapters. Her grandmother is an elder so she thinks she's hot stuff. Anyway, seeing that MC is speaking with TS (gasp! what indecency!) these two girls pick a fight with MC, asking why she is not studying alchemy with that alchemy girl, but speaking with TS. They tell her to not think about things that do not belong to her. MC is not a pushover, so she basically says, I think you need to take your own advice. The annoying girl's grandmother actually told her to not offend MC as her status was actually not lower than her own (the annoying girls), and this makes her really angry, saying, who are you? to actually talk to me like this!? TS tries to defuse the situation, except it makes it look like he's siding with MC, which makes the girls even more mad. Right then, an elder shows up (I think it's the annoying girls grandma? I don;t know). The elder berates the annoying girl in front of everyone, she feels really humiliated but can't fight back and hates MC even more. The elder sentences her to "the wall of fasting"? and until she says so, the annoying girl cannot come out.
202- that elder isn't really helping MC. Elder puts pressure on MC, finds out that MC is the disciple of a nascent soul cultivator, then shows some more respect. Her true purpose is to convince MC to refine a furnace (I think? or maybe some sort of pill) for them. MC agrees. The elder gifts MC a rare spirt it beast.
203- MC subtly mentions to sect leader that TS asked her to take him away to Kunwu, sect leader understands and apologies to MC. The rare beast that was gifted to MC is a really cute looking cat. MC has to make a contract with it.
204- some long talks with the three elders of Bixuan court, how can see MC's real age and real cultivation level, and after some interrogation, they decide to proceed with the pill refining.

You can rest assured that Tiange doesn’t rely heavily on a man. Currently she’s stronger than most cultivators in her cultivation realm and her power ups make a lot of sense, so she’s also not super OP for no reason at all besides making the character a self insert.. which is a big problem in CN. She’s one of my favorite protagonists and pretty relatable too. Give it a try

This is not true. They tell you that she is stronger, but on page she never so much as defeats someone at the same level. They literally just had someone who is only core formation destroying people that are his strength or stronger than him with ease and even cutting off Tiange from an item who's plane is too high for this to be reasonable. People equate different with good, but this novel is really starting to lose my interest. There is a lot of tell don't show, and Tiange being way too weak even though she has a better physique and cultivation technique than 99% of the characters introduced.

Well you have to conside that Tiange isn’t a core formation cultivator plus the guy is using some kind of forbidden devil technique and you’re giving an example of someone who defeated 3 middle stage core formation cultivators with EASE with said forbidden technique while Tiange is still a level lower than this guy- this is a really unfair comparison. I remember that Tiange defeated 5 maids under Jinghe and one or two of which were on the same level as her without too much trouble (although it is mentioned that they don’t go out much due to being maids.) However, when she was in that cave made by the spirit left behind by a nascent soul cultivator (or whatever his level was I don’t quite remember) she fought against 3 men, one of which I remember to be at her level (middle stage of foundation building at the time) and was able to subdue them, and this guy probably had way more experience than Tiange considering that he is a lot older than her. You say that she has never defeated someone at the same level but she does and you’re clearly neglecting that and choosing an unfair example.

    >right now Tiange JUST ascended to late stage foundation building

On a side note, I like that she is struggling or taking a cautious route and not fighting if she doesn’t have to. I know different doesn’t equal to good but neither does different equal to bad, and I know what I like- we don’t have to like the same thing, maybe you don’t care for something being different but I for one do. I’m sick and tired of an extremely OP Mary Sue character who goes around doing whatever they like without thinking of consequences; Tiange is pretty strong for someone at her level while not totally overstepping her level boundary and she doesn’t try to fight everyone in her way, which I appreciate. And you seem to think that the only reason why I like this is because it’s different but I’ll have to stop you on that, I also like it because the writing flows very well, in my opinion, and the world building, although similar to many other cultivation novels, is well explored and I enjoy the MC’s passiveness at certain times and that I sometimes relate to her. Please don’t assume I only like this because “it’s different”, that’s merely one of the reasons I enjoy reading this novel.

It's immersion breaking when you have an MC with all of her many advantages struggling against people of the same cultivation level, then you just throw in some dude who is not that talented, and he owns everyone he comes across because of an unexplained cultivation technique. The story isn't even following the rules that it setup, while also throwing in random things that never even came up in the novel. What Is dead aura, and how does our MC who is in the of the strongest schools have no knowledge of it? This is what you call an asspull. Also, Tiange is using the strongest cultivation technique that we have seen so far in the series. Having a random guy find a technique that blows everything we see out of the water makes no sense logically. He's blowing past cultivation levels like they're not even there, when it has been made clear over and over again that it takes years and sufficient preparation just to make it to foundation establishment. This guy runs right past core formation even though he literally didn't have the talent for it. Bad writing is bad writing. Phoenix Destiny so far at least can hold the narrative together without adding completely random things that break the rules of the world and also doesn't nerf the MC to unbelievable standards. If the author wanted a weak MC don't give her a super rare physique and then have her ancestor remold her meridians and then give her a deification realm cultivation technique. It's kind of lame when that same character struggles against people with only core formation masters as their backing.

I think that’s a whole other argument to the one you first brought up, but as I’ve said she doesn’t struggle against those in the same level as her, especially not if she’s using her tools, it’s been seen multiple times and I’m not sure if we are reading the same novel or if you are skipping many parts in this novel. As for being immersion breaking, I can kind of understand where you’re coming from but personally I didn’t feel like it broke my immersion. On the part of untalented, random technique- if he was talentless he wouldn’t have made it to late stage foundation realm with his not so great aptitude while he was held back from advancing by his inner demon, he does have talent and is schemy to boot but I can definitely see why you think it’s out of place for this guy to be as strong as he is; however the author never delves into devil cultivator before so we don’t know their exact power level and can’t judge that he’s “over powered” since we don’t have a reference to compare him with powers of a similar scale. It was hinted that he would not grow this fast if he had a dragon body and cultivated a dragon technique, so we definitely know that this devil technique (maybe this one is one whole other caliber to other devil techniques) is definitely up there on the power scale.

I think your problem with this novel isn’t exactly that this guy is way OP though, but more so that Tiange can’t beat this guy and that some dude you perceive to be on the same level as Tiange (which he’s not) way outclasses her.

Personally, I’m fine with struggle and I’m fine with the MC not being the most powerful, I even like it and read many other novels like it, be it on Webnovel, on Novelupdates, in manga, or hard copy novels, I find that the experience is better when the MC doesn’t outclass everyone and I’m a big fan of shounen so I always love the journey and the hardship an MC puts in to overcome something, but others might not like that.

I can totally understand why you would call it bad writing, but as you can see we’ve read the same novel and arrived at the same scene with different satisfaction level and I think it’s good writing while you think it’s bad writing, at the end of the day that’s a subjective statement.

Now I’d like to leave this convo after this reply as I don’t think I have anything else to say, and I don’t want this to be heated.

Her master said that the devil cultivator dude's cultivation technique is different from the common other devil cultivators this explains why mc doesn't know anything about this kind of cultivation.
