Merge Shounen-ai and Yaoi into Boys Love (Shoujo-ai and Yuri to Girls Love)

    Uh, in the case of BL novels, the original listed genre in raws is boys love (or danmei). They don't use yaoi and shounen-ai like we do. The differentiation between yaoi and shounen-ai is a western audience construct.

    I feel like when the translator has to educate the masses about a tag that no one uses anymore, it's probably best to just simplify.

    The thing is..."Yaoi" doesn't exist in Japan, let alone China. "Shounen ai" doesn't exist in Japan, let alone China. They're Westernized terms in the first place. Japan uses the term "BL". The west uses the term "BL". The yaoi/shounen ai thing works out well enough in manga, but it doesn't work nearly as well with novels. Why stick with it?

    Agreed, only as long as there's a tag to represent ones with hardcore content. I don't really like shounen ai...

    I know! lets make the entire process more complicated!!!
    before someone is allowed to add a tag, they have to pass a multiple choice quiz on the tag meaning!!!!!
    (this is partially sarcastic, idk anything about whether this is even possible or how hard it would be to implement it)

    Seriously, the choice of multiple tags makes NovelUpdates fun to use compared to other sites.
    It will be taking away one of the things that make NovelUpdates cool... for lack of a better word

    We still have general tags. This is just a genre tag complaint. These are two tags that don't make sense, are misused, and overall useless to those who want to use them.

    But does it really help you? Nearly all BL novels I've encountered lately have both the shounen-ai and yaoi genre tag.

    Yeah sure. Whatever. At least then we won't have people adding Yaoi when they read guy A and guy B making google eyes with each other.

    Just a reminder though. R-18 is only for JP novels as of now. So if there is going to be a GL or BL genre, it covers everything that would have been covered in Smut, but between the same gender.

    This.

    Shounen-ai and Yaoi as two different genres only works on most JP ones. We also have danmei (Chinese BL novel) nowadays which is more often than not a combination of the two. There are only a few that only have one of the two such as @Sakhyu 's work. It got tagged Yaoi when it doesn't go that far until the genre had to be locked.

    Also agree with what @remy911 had said. In Japan, all that fencing stuff (in material or in immaterial world) is just called Yaoi or Boys Love. Since the Heretic Western Fandom is not in the communion with the Rotten Eastern Fandom, both of them adopt different terminology.

    専門用語の使い方としては、二次創作を「やおい」、オリジナル商業作品を「ボーイスラブ」と区別するような日本での傾向はアメリカには存在せず、まとめてBL・Yaoiと呼んでいる。長池一美は、欧米ではライトテイストの作品が「少年愛」、性描写のある作品は「やおい」と呼ばれると述べている
    So basically: The Rotten Japanese call their doujin "Yaoi" and the original commercial series/show "Boys Love". While the Heretic Americans lump them in the same category as BL-Yaoi and divided this into 2: Shounen Ai for no fencing depiction and Yaoi for fencing depiction, something that the Rotten Japanese didn't do.

    All in all, I hope all of them burn... Yuri Faction Arise!

    Wouldn't "yaoi" just need to be labeled with a BL genre tag + Mature genre tag? Same with "yuri". Not necessarily smut, unless it's smutty of course. And if there's no Mature or Smut tag, then it'd be assumed that it's shounen/shoujo ai. As far as I understand.

    I found it funny tho..
    Yaoi -> Boy's love -> shounen ai -> boy's love -> yaoi
    And the japanese denied shounen ai despite translating yaoi into boy's love which is basically meens shounen ai in japanese..
    The western was like, but a boy's love must be innocent right? Unlike that hardcore yaoi stuff with lots of swordfights..
    The japanese was like, we dont recognize shounen ai we only recognize boy's love. Lol
