Discussion My Wife Hates it When I read Harem Novels!

Me and my wife both loves to read Wuxia and Xianxia novels in our free time. She mostly reads the one that has female protagonist with romance/shoujo setting like Descent of the Phoenix and the Demonic King Chases His Wife or your just normal Japanese shoujo romance novels too where as I can read almost anything. I particularly don't care if it is harem or not, I have read and loved "Coiling Dragon" and also "I Shall Seal The Heaven" and I also love "Heavenly Jewel Change", "Against The God" and "Renegade Immortal"

-She loves to discuss how one of her female protagonist is more badass than one of the male protagonist from the novels that I read, but one day we got into a long argument. I am gonna cut it short, she said "you only read Harem novels" and she thinks i quote "you prefer harem in real life too?". For some reason she feels offended that I read such novels. I said "you shouldn't mix fantasy with reality, I only read it for personal enjoyment what I think and prefer has nothing to do with it", then she asked me a hypothetical question "suppose IF you could have a harem, would you have it?", and I said "Of course not because that would hurt you" and then she said "that means you would have it if it didn't matter me". I was confused at that point and not sure how to reply her, and we ended the argument on a bitter note.

-Anyone can give me some opinions as for how I can make her understand without giving up on the novels that I read?

She’s basically asking you if you consent to polygamy, in a harem way.
She feels offended cause it’s sexist. And it’s a Male fantasy wet dream that dehumanised woman.

I’m female, I don’t like harem either but I also read pretty much anything.
Just tell her your read anything including harem, not because you like harem but because of other factors of the story.

And no, you do not want harem since it’s just a fantasy.

Give her reverse harem or just like me I only read shoujo in front of my fiancee. to risky to read harem in front of wife/fiancee since they will think we would keep a mistress or we will become a polygamist.

 

Well, I wouldn’t have a harem, because (assuming I finally leave the Forever Alone Village) I’m too possessive and would hate having to share/give my love with another extra tag-along. I’d go full yandere in my love. You should also recommend her some reverse harem. I think the best way to explain it is how you’d love to faceslap, save damsels, or gruesomely get revenge on some cannon fodder, but wouldn’t do that in irl.

 

Your wife surely mad. Told her its our nature as man who want a harem in the first place xd then told her, now im managed to overcome my nature and only need you to completed my life, so your love enough to cover it. I'll die without you.

Harem novels tend to be misogynistic and like make women out to be wimpering nothings that can't stand up on their own two feet without a man...like, forget your wife, would you like your daughter to end up in that kind of arrangement with a man? Or a sister? If not, then there is your answer right there.

 

Maybe try explaining to her that its usually not a harem more like a dense mc with lots of love interests.
Though I don't read wuxia much so may be the harems are different from manga/anime.

 

Tell her this, “Would I like a harem? Well that’s considering that there’s another woman insane enough to love me other than you.”
