Debate Competition

Well, let's jump right into it.

The debating competition will consist of 2 Parts. The first being the Team Debates, which will be composed of 3 person teams, and the second being an Individual tournament because one competition wasn't enough for @Pyoo & @BlancFrost

The debates will likely occur in this format.

The debate will be held over 20 days-ish with each 'phase' being composed of a varying amount of hours. Phases are as follows;

Research phase 168 hrs( 1week) - debaters may research and organize their data and discuss among themselves about which points to use, method of presentation etc.

Presentation 72 hrs (3 days) - this phase is the shortest because it'll just be a representative of the team posting their data in whatever presentation method(s) they choose to utilize such as: essay, graph, bullet points, etc. (Please provide sources of data)

Counters 120 hrs (5 days) - debaters may take this time to review their opponent's presentation(s) and provide counter-arguments.

Questioning/judging 120 hrs (5 days) - spectators/judges maybe question the debaters or inquire about their presentation and the debaters ability to answer will be judged.

• Is it better to be a public otaku or a "closet otaku" (who hides their interests)?
• Should NUF ban clone accounts?
• E-books or physical books?
• Is it better for translators to prioritize fast translations or high quality translations?
• Should mods receive an allowance? In nuffies of course!
• Has the monetization of the translation market been good for the community?
• Is @anhrefn the best mod of NUF?
• Paywalls are good for the industry / author.
• 5 star rating system is apparently not good, debate this: http://forum.novelupdates.com/threads/replace-the-5-stars-rating-system.45479/, alternatively: the current rating system is good.
• Coiling Dragon is the best novel.
• Non-straight relationships should just be tagged as Romance like other straight relationships. Alternatively: having yaoi/yuri relationships not as the main point of the novel shouldn’t require the yaoi/yuri tag.
• The rapid growth of NUF community is good (?)
• The current division or distinction between profile posters and thread posters is fine.
• Polygamy in real life should be fine, I mean look at the amount of Harem novels! Alternatively, Harem vs Polygamy
• I’m sleepy. Sleep is for the weak!
• Everyone should exercise limit (?) in their internet selves, as much as their offline self. Alternatively, having different internet and offline selves is good.
• People should get back to real life and stop being in the internet / forum all the time
• Reading and their effects, e.g.
• Reading too much CN has lead the young readers of NU to be arrogant young masters.
• Reading too much OP MC has lead the readers to have a misconception of themselves thinking if they’re not OP like that (which they aren’t) then they won’t live well (?) Or if they are OP then they should be entitled to things in life.

First of all, will there be any penalization to someone who give up in the middle of the debate?

One more question. How will the individual debate work? Will there be just two people to each topic, or more than two?

If I wanna sign up, does it mean that I have to allocate a lot of my time to this?

As in, should I keep most of my time during the days this goes on for free? Or can I just randomly pop in and out of the debate.

If it's the latter, sign me up! But I don't have any friends so help me pls.

 

There's no Penalty, your opponent will simply win by default.

Well you'll both be assigned a random topic, and you may choose your stances( For or Against), though If you both with to choose the same stance then we'll choose via coin-flip or some other random event.

And yes, topics likely won't be reused to prevent people from mooching of the work of others >~>
So only two people will ever be assigned to a topic in the Individuals.

The topics are just plain stupid. Why so long? Make it 3 days or so.

We were going to do that when we had more time and closer to the date that the event is going to be hosted from. By making a thread early there may be irrelevant posts posted into the thread (and we really don't have the spare time, we don't want to make something halfhearted but complete when announcing the start of an event). By having all questions directed to the main thread we can organise and keep the event threads clean when we actually get around to making them. So when we make the thread for the events the details will link to that thread.

We only put the details under the event heading so that everyone can get an idea on what the event entitles. When I first made the post there were no details at all.

 

It's that long because it's giving the teams a lot of time to coordinate since they're in different time-zones.
