Mods (from the original word modify) are what happens when you change something, specifically when related to software. a typical case would be downloading a mod for a game such as skyrim to change all of the dragons into thomas the tank engine. in this case it could refer to someone modding how the site appears on their browser. such as making all the background colors darker so it is easier to read in the dark.
