    Realms in the Firmament's early chapters had a tug-of-war between one translator (https://www.reddit.com/r/noveltrans...ncement_about_realms_in_the_firmament/d0mgvof) who was slower but more readable against XianXiaWorld, which had a pretty terrible reputation back then. Their chapter 3 remains unedited to this day as evidenced by the poem in the novel. Compare:

    In fact, I'd like to think that it was this particular tiff and the resulting criticism thereof that stung XXW to get more editors to look over their future translations, because they rapidly improved thereafter.

    Wow the difference was huge. I haven't seen the raw but it looks like the premiumredtea one got some nuances missed by xxw completely. The translation is written so much better as well.

    Gotta find the NUF thread for this drama.

    Here's a tiny drama from a decade ago in the manga scanlation section. Animewaves had a series poached by some nameless day one starter group. Names called, boasts and put downs issued, at least one irc visit per side, then everyone got down to work trying to out scan the speed scanner. Pulled resources off other projects, translators going on triple shifts leading to eventual burnout, editors, proofreaders crunching to beat speed scanners while maintaining the same quality, if I recall correctly sfx editing was dropped. Potential projects not even started. The other side eventually dropped the series and Aw finished after investing so much but it pretty much killed the group as the staff took breaks which lead to them finding something more interesting and they drifted away.

    So be careful if you ever find yourself in a position of defending. We believed there were many projects to bring to readers and build fan base that way, never thought a tiny no name manga would be poached.
