I, as a poor college student, will make hand crafted cards for my mother. - I took a childhood painting of did of mother and made a miniature version using construction paper, an xacto knife and glue and it looked nice and it obviously took some time, so it showed my filial piety
Well you could serve breakfast in bed (something simple ofcourse), then buy a couple movie tickets/theater/opera tickets and take her out for the evening. Then come back home and eat with your family as a whole (perhaps order chinese ?).

My mom says I did that for her once when I was really young, but that I tried to poison her, so she won't let me do it anymore... Something about putting perfume in her milk. Apparently, I wanted it to smell nice for her.

Put a congratulation note above. You have a present. Make a video editing of something like family vacations. Ask your father about her favorite music or movie and give tht to her. USB are cheap. Conquer the world make her the Queen (obviously you are not going to be the king). Give me Japan. Present served.
Sure that's a good idea but im not too good with art and stuff so imma just make her a heart made of red coloured paper
How about buying or making your mom's favorite food? Or something simple but thoughtful. For example: massages, doing chores, say "i love you mom", sing a song, listen to her troubles, ect.
