There's no harm in having extra crafting/loot/money. Especially in RPG without weight limitation. So break all the pot and barrel, and harvest the herb! The only exception is for extra complicated dungeon/puzzle, where I just want to scream "Where is the exit?"

I loot it all. At least in games where there is no penalty for doing so. In games where there is I consider the pros and cons of the action. I'm probably Chaotic Good or Neutral Good.

I loot it all of course, some RPGs have different experiences if you do that. The original Dragon Age had a lot of money to be made if you explored, pickpocketed and picked the options that gave the most rewards/money in quests.

So two different people would have such a different in experience, one would be decked out in the best gear possible by the end of the game and one would struggle to even gear one character with the best loot.

In the other direction, Dragon Age 2 had only so little gold you could make. You would never end the game with all your party decked out, I imagine that it was a design choice from the devs or it just turned out that way.

I picked these two examples to illustrate how important balance is in terms of loot and economy even in a single player RPG game. Some players were quite unhappy that they could not get every item on a playthrough without cheating or bug abusing ( I don't recall if there were some ).

I remember first time playing Fallout 3 when i first looted a mutant meat bag and found some human body parts.... I thought to myself "Can we put them back together?"... and hoping there's a quest later that lets you build your own meat shield, i kept collecting. I was verily disappointed that i never found a mod to help you do that...
Anyway, every once in a while, i get this urge to play an rpg that lets you run around as a necromancer. Unfortunately, i don't have one at the moment readily available, so i'm necro-ing this thread as a form of release.

Loot everything, even the dead (threads).
