The title is pretty common so It was a little hard for me to find the novel but somehow I managed to do so ... Spoiler: Prologue So MC has been reborn 5 times like the synopsis says. She’s a substitute for the Emperor’s companion who was thought to be dead. In the first life she was ignorant and had no problems being loved as a substitute but after the original returned she was ruined. In the second life she wanted to be loved for herself but the emperor only wanted the one he lost so the day they met was the first the last time she ever saw him in that life because basically pulled an ooc. MC notes the third and fourth life are the same, she did her best to be a substitute and thought she was the useless one for not being able to make the emperor love the real her. However, she was still deeply hurt that after trying so hard she was ruined (as MC puts it) once the real one returned. In the fifth life her resentment spilled over and she couldn’t take anymore and blamed the original for returning and causing her so much grief. Her actions led to the position we find her in chapter 0/the prologue. It’s so not funny like they showed this babe no mercy. MC had her nails pulled out for scratching the original’s cheek, her tongue cut off (the story says “the tongue that got in the way of the two” so I’m guessing the tongue that schemed), lost her eyes “the eye that aimed for her” the story says, and had her back whipped to show she was covered in sins. In the prologue she’s seating in prison and is waiting to be executed. MC gums into her fingers as best she can (because the story mentions all her teeth were pulled out) and despite being blind manages to draw a symbol the story informs us she is very familiar with (I’m guessing it’s by that symbol she’s been able to be reborn so many times) and swears this time it will be different. She promised herself this at the start of each life, but this time she’s done. She’s no longer gunning for the shitty emperor’s love but swears not to hang off him anymore. She traces the symbol with her fingers and like the other times her body got weak and her mind blurry. She notes like the other times it felt like someone was holding her hand, and with that she takes her last breath
Yo with how this story has hyped the MC’s grief I’ll have to stab someone if the face slapping isn’t worthy of a few chef’s kisses
So according to the Kakao reviews there are two potential MLs: - Shitty emperor Reimund? ( a dragon/dragonkind, incensed readers like referring to him as a lizard) - Johann/Yohan (an adventurer/demon?) The general consesus is that they're both selfish obssessive pricks in their own way and that the MC is better off ending up alone by herself. Anyways, True ML seems to be the demon/Johann because according to spoilers MC ends up pregnant with their child? Though, readers referred to the ending as either Merry-bad or sad. Since I never read the novel and never will, I won't ever know the reason or circumstances why. As always, take this with a grain of salt since I'm not a novel reader and this information was taken from spoiler comments and reviews of other people.
Found another spoiler on why people might have considered the ending sad: According to one reader ML is immortal/has infinite lifespan while MC only has a limited one which means she'll die eventually and leave him alone (not 100% sure). Don't know if this was adressed in the main novel in some way (and reader just missed it) or if there are any side stories that resolve this problem or anything... Perharps Author purposely wanted to leave it open ended. If anyone knows the answer feel free to share since I don't have the patience to sift through thousands of comments to find it.
