In the edges of my vision, I saw a mass of blue and green spinning towards me. The frame of the ship creaked and whined as the rapid descent took its toll.

    “We're going down!”

Alarms howled and my best friend by my side screamed. Is this the end? After all that we survived, after all, that we had been through, we are going to fall to our deaths? On the planet we were trying to escape from no less!

After battling politicians and governments, running from pursuing frigates, fending off space pirates, falling through a fucking Wormhole! And we die to a simple fall from space…

    “Camron! Get the reactor online!”

Sierra shouted into the comms and a few moments later a screen on the console came to life telling us that power was restored.

“Samuel! Divert power from unnecessary systems to stabilizers!”

    “Diverting…”

The shaking and spinning gradually stopped and we got a full view of the planet below. What I once thought of as earth was definitely not. I’m pretty sure that no continent on earth glows red, that and the fact that no battleships armed to the teeth have come to greet us.

    “Samuel, where are we?”

“Unknown. All known points of reference not located.”

The smart AI, Samuel, didn’t know where we were? A smart AI is supposed to know everything! They run cities and flagships, they have a shared network of information archives across the solar system. How is this possible! Every planet, star, and nebula in the Milkyway and local group was cataloged. Does this mean we left the galaxy?

    “Anything on the comms...”

Sierra was flipping through the channels looking for anyone we could radio for help.

“...even if we get recaptured we’ll still be alive!”

“There is no communication activity on known channels and no wavelength movement to suggest anything on encrypted channels,” Samuel answered.

Meanwhile, we are still falling towards the planet.

“Camron! Main engines would be nice!”

Luckily the onboard communications to the engine room still functioned fine.

“They're not responding! The wormhole messed up the ping request system and the fuel injector regulators are blown out! I would need to replace the quantum resistant cones and reroute to the auxiliary!”

    “English please!”

“The main engines are offline permanently!”

Camron, our crew's engineer, was one of the smartest people I knew. I picked him up out of debtor's prison and gave him the job despite the protest of the board of directors. To be fair though it was a dear waste of talent slogging down in the mines.

“Carol, the stabilizers won’t last! We need to abandon ship!”

“We can’t! The escape pod was blasted out by the empire bastards!”

    “Carol…”

I turned around and found Atri, our ships doctor, standing in the doorway. I used to be friends with her when she was young. She was a good kid that had been taken advantage of for her brain. I picked her up from a corporation that went under due to “Industrial espionage”. Somehow all her inventions ended up on the Solar-Wide Web and the company went bankrupt. I may have had something to do with that.

    “Atri, were gonna be fine.”

I stepped back from the console to reassure her.

“But Mr. Angles said that the engines aren't working. Are we going to die!”

    “No! No one is dying!”

I said that a little bit more forcefully than I probably should have but it was more for my sake than for others. We were stranded in outer space, the main engines are offline, no civilization to radio for help. We were a floating coffin.

Suddenly, the radar system began to detect something.

“Madams, there is an incoming object. Course correction and finely controlled movement suggests sentience.”

    “See, we're not dying.”

I turn my back on Atri and head back to the console.

“Are they hailing us Samuels? Are they Empire or Alliance?”

“Negative. Short and long range scanners are inoperable after being exposed to the radiation of the wormhole. Calibration is recommended. In the meantime, visual confirmation will be required to further confirm.”

    “Damn.”

We don’t even know if they're going to shoot at us much less if we will survive. The empire wants to capture which after what we pulled on Novus is akin to a death sentence itself. We could be in unknown alliance territory. If so, the alliance will probably just board us, interrogate and torture, take what they want and burn what's left. Wouldn’t be the first time.

“Object should be visual in 5...4...3...2...1…”

Out of the black, a golden dot grows bigger and bigger getting closer. It expertly dodged space debris and course corrected like Samuels said but it obviously was no ship. Whatever it was, it was getting closer.

It stopped in front of our viewport and I finally could make out some details. It was a man, clothed in robes of golden light and on his back a pair of shining wings spread themselves in glory.

    “Samuels?”

I asked not taking my eyes off of it.

    “Scanners are still offline.”

I didn’t really need scanners to check. Whatever it was, it emanated an aura of power, like standing on the surface of a star. I had a feeling that if it wanted to it could kill us and a second and there was nothing we could do against it.

    “Clark. Get up here now!”

    Sierra called into the comms.

“What! You told me to secure the cargo bay!”

“Don’t care. Get up here now and bring the biggest gun you have.”

Clark was our metal man. On other words our weapons expert. A former mercenary, retired early after making a fortune fighting in the Mars-Venus conflict. I convinced him to get back into the business after a few persuasion. Although I’m not sure if that was a good idea considering his few, pitiful attempts to woo Atri.

“Belay that weapons command Clark. In fact, leave any weapons you have before you get up here.”

Sierra looked at me weirdly for a second.

“Hey, I’m all for conflict but for once I know this isn’t someone we can mess around with. Camron, you get up here too. Samuels, see what you can do with the engines.”

The golden being just looked at each and every one of us as we fell towards the planet. Soon the cockpit started to heat up as we descended into the atmosphere. The rest of the crew got into the cockpit and.

“Critical system failure! All main engines are offline. Repair required.”

“Well, it's been good knowing you all.”

    “Likewise man.”

    Clark and Cameron shook hands.

“Hey, I got a case of beer in my cabin. Who wants some, last chance your gonna get.”

    “I could do with some.”

“But Carol says we're going to be OK.”

Cameron and Clark looked at each other and unanimously decided to tell her.

“Come on kid, look. Engines are down. We're falling out of the sky. The stabilizers are the only thing slowing our fall and keeping us from being shaken up like a blender. Once the fuel for those goes out...well, might as well enjoy ourselves while we can.”

“Besides, even god himself sent us an escort to the afterlife.”

Cameron explained the technical situation to Atri and Clark tossed some smart ass comments on his way out. Sierra was writing in the last Ships log and activating the distress signal just in case anyone ever found this place. At least they would know where the captain of the Ignis Fortem

“I think I’ll join you. Coming captain?”

“I think I’ll stay here a little longer. I’ll join ya later.”

Sierra smiled at that one and closed the door behind everyone. As if there was going to be a later. At least if I was to die, I would like to know what or rather who is this angel that will escort us to Heaven or hell. Hell for me most likely and I hope Heaven for Atri.

    “Do you understand me?”

The angel smiled and shook his head yes.

    “Can you save us?”

Again he shook his head yes.

My eyes went wide and I felt my spirit perk up a little.

    “Will you please do it?”

    He shook his head no.

    Immediately my spirit plummeted

    “Why not?”

The angel rubbed his fingers together to convey that I needed to pay.

“What do you want? I’ll sell my soul if you could only save my people. Please! Let them live!”

I was on my knees begging now in front of the viewport. Atri, Cameron, Sierra, even that sneaky alcoholic Clark. We’ve all been through so much together and for all of us to end like this. Atri...All I wanted was for us to live an easy untroubled life.

The ship rattled and alarms sounded as the stabilizer fuel ran out, plummeting not only my spirit even further but also the lives of everyone on this ship towards the ground. The angel didn’t even notice the drop in altitude and continued standing in front of the viewport. He appeared to ponder my offer a moment but clapping his hands. The golden light that surrounded ship and Samuels popped up on the monitors.

“Madam, internal sensors are detecting an unknown radiation has penetrated the shielding. This unknown radiation is concentrating around all crew members. All engines are back online. Mam, your orders.”

Magic. There was no other word for it. It pooled itself around me and the ship, slowing our fall. It repaired the injuries I had sustained in the firefights with the Empire troops and even fixed the ship. No technology could ever do this…

Suddenly I was lifted up by the golden light and I felt my soul being dissolved. I guess

    “Captain!”

Cameron and everyone else ran through the door only to be greeted by such a sight. Cam tried to grab me but a golden barrier sprang up from nowhere and blocked him. Clark shoved him aside and started shooting the barrier with his LTR-A4 Assault rifle. As if laughing at a child's attempts to stand, the angel smiled and I knew I my soul was being taken as payment.

    “Carol! Please No!”

Atri screamed, tears falling down her face.

I turned to stare her directly in the eyes.

    “Live well.”

And with that, the connection between my soul and body was snapped and I lost all meaning of thought.
