I'm surprised and shocked there isn't a thread for this. I must say, the first two episodes are awesome. I was a little hesitant, as I usually am with female leads, but wow. It was good, *licks lips*. With movie-like animation, and an intriguing story, all along with interesting and unique characters and interactions... it's a must see. Synopsis: Set roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series and separate from the timeline of the concurrent feature films, the series follows the USS Discovery that discovers new worlds and lifeforms as one Starfleet officer learns to understand all things alien.
I found it to be ok, just very generic. What I thought to be bad is, the dialogue, character interactions, decision making, and all the combat.
What I thought was off were two things. (1) Stance "The Federation" had on the Klingon, and (2) the way some of the leaders, who were so divided, seem to be wrapped up in putting that new guy as a leader. It would have done well to see a more slow progression in the politics of it all. But who knows, maybe we'll see it later.
I think the MC might be suicidal. She appears competent but the decision to approach the relic after getting a visual without support was just dumb. If a klingon was not present because of the plot, there should have been proximity defenses.
I am a huge star trek fan. But I am not paying money just to watch this on top of everything else. First CBS paywalls star trek, and now MGM is paywalling the new star gate. What is this world coming to.
It's still a bit early and I hope the show get better once thet are on the discovery. I would like for Michael to learn from her mistakes and grow, not just swept under the rug. Next Gen didn't start getting better until 3rd season and the other shows weren't much better in their first season.
Not worried. I was hesitant at a lead. It's like a woman reading a novel with a male lead or a male reading a novel with a female lead. I can't say it for all of them, but it's a general consensus that people are more comfortable with stories they can relate to. It's more of an immersion affect than anything else. But if the story is good, you still feel that immersion. An example will be some romance shows. I scoff at some of the lovey dove-y actions, and the stupidity of how the males would act in towards a woman, while you see trending comments of girls going "Kyaaa! I wish that would happen to me!!!" Or something. But a mature concept, has always been favorable to my interest. Which this show had.
I like how Jason Isaac said they don't care about the old trek fans but the fans will watch it anyway because they're to stupid not to
I just hate that this series is made in 2017.. Because it feels the emo, wimpy vibe from this series. Watching new tv series like watching kid series.. Seriously kiddo.. Why must all series feels emo??
Sarek mentored the girl and seems to be fond of her (even giving vulcan secrets) and yet in all other trek stories he is disappointed with Spock for being too human. and the Klingons don't look like Klingons! too many changes happened since enterprise and the first jj abrams movie for me to be wary of this. will wait until a season 2 or something before I really take this seriously.
