Do i need to know how to read chinese or japanese characters to translate a webnovel or should i just MT then edit it later? I'd appreciate if you make it clearer to me
I personally think you'd be better off knowing a bit of the language you're translating the novel from, and also the grammar structure. I mean if MT + edit was that simple to translate a novel I'm sure we would have more high quality novels translated.
Well it doesnt really matter. But if you start and dont know Japanese or Chinese then MT with editing. And if you do know its apreciated when its translated without MT. And its nice if you say its a MT 2.
I think it's gonna be reaallly hard to start MTing without having a basic knowledge of the language. All those famous great MT translators on the web ( rainbow turtle, yoraikun, etc, etc. ) has a basic understanding of the language actually.
You need basic knowledge, after all MT is no god, there are a bunch of inaccurate WORDS, not only the structure, but the words themselves sometimes translate wrong.
I'm fairly sure Yoraikun is not MTL. I remember he made a post explaining his own translating method simplifying Kanji to something else Hiragan something. Not that he cannot understand Japanese to translate it, but the process makes it easier and faster for him to translate.
You should know the language to translate it, or at least know the fundamental of it if you decide to use MTL. Just please, please, don't MTL even though you don't know the language. It will turn into an unreadable mess.
From my experience, If you want to MT, then you definitely have to have at least a basic knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
i only read using Translation Assistant + translation aggregator. it ok if you want MTL without learning basic. i ignore Japanese letter and read the romaji on Jparser. you'll be fine with short sentences after few chapter. but you'll keep struggling with long sentences. if you still want to MTL without learning basic.... 1. start from 1st chapter 2. read few chapter so you can grasp naming sense and a little of that novel writing style. 3. patience
I can understand basic Japanese and ill do a bit of MTL after and try to edit it. Thanks for giving your advices!
