VPN to use whilst on holidays in china?

Hi, this is my first time posting here so please advise me if there's anything I'm missing.
I'm planning to go on holidays to China in about a week's time and it's just occurred to me that the Great Firewall exists there. If possible I'd like to continue to read my novels, manga, and play all of my numerous otoges and other games whilst overseas but I have no idea what VPN I should choose, or if they work on phone apps. Sorry for the trouble but does anyone have advice about any reasonably priced vpns? I think for me, priority would be that the vpns work for apps (got to save my rankings in all my games :')) and that it's not too expensive since I'm only an university student. Thanks!

 

Haven't been to China, but my dorm blocks certain content on the internet. I use GeckoVPN. It doesn't have any price I think, but it is kinda slow compared to other VPNs I've used. Hi VPN is faster, but there's only a few countries to choose from if you don't pay for premium. It's still free to download though, so you can try that as well if you want to. Just a disclaimer that I have no idea have The Great Firewall of China works, so these might not work.

 

depends on the purpose of use. Most of the time you will be just fine using Turbo VPN (the one with the rabbit logo) on the mobile. For pc you will have to buy something like astrill or express vpn. Free ones and 1$ ones do not work at all here. Also do note that while i cant say anything about astrill, express has been up and down lately.

 

any free vpn is a no go. it will die quickly.
you need those on subscription without the free option.

 

Nah turbo hasnt failed me once since september. There is also that chinese one that is made specifically for youtube but i dont remember the name and it sucks for anything but youtube.

some of the other commenters have noted that free vpns don't work though so I might just have to suck it up and fork out some money :/

I think I'd be fine with just having the vpn on my phone, so Turbo VPN is the one to go?
I'm assuming since they're separate between mobile and pc that the vpns only work with 1 device at a time?

Depends on the vpn. Astrill afaik works on 1 device at a time. Express allows for 3. Turbo doesnt require sub (it has one, but its useless, so just use the free version) so it works on whatever you have it installed on. It is also a mobile app so forget about using it on a laptop.

 

For now I think I might go with turbo or express then... just to confirm turbo works with all apps etc?
Oh I've just checked the turbo vpn in google play and it states that it doesn't work in china which is a shame :/

 

I remember using a vpn for 5-6 dollars/month and it was working alright. it's been 2 years and i dont remember the name but you can just look up on internet vpn for china and then look them up. Just make sure everything is in order before going, because I didn't and it was a nighmare to set it up in China.

 

Thanks for the reminder! Yep, I'm glad I remembered about the firewall issue now rather than when I land in china.

 

Works for me, and most of my friends use it as well. Some do have problems though. I also didnt download it from google store, as i had no vpn at that time:z.

 

China also try everyday to block those, so sometime it won't work for a few hours.

Did a quick look and it seem's express is the best rate in 2019.

 

Good point, if it works for you and your friends I might have a look at their website. When was the last time you used Turbo in China? I've also noticed expressVPN has a 30 day money back guarantee which I might exploit since I'm only going to be in China for around 3 weeks.

FYI express had been down on my mobile for about a week now. PC is better.

Like every single day. I am still in China. I also did not download it from the website but rather via yandex search (russian decent search engine that is not banned in china) and the first link for a shady app site. Bless android.
Personally id probably advice against express as things are right now to be honest, but as i have not tried nord/astrill etc i cannot say anything about them.

ty for the heads up, hopefully express starts working again soon. I might download another one with express in case it still isn't working when I leave for China next week.

 

Watch out for everything, it may spontaneously explode.
