If you're asking about what I think you're asking, then 纯爱小说 is a BL novel and 言情小说 is a normal romance novel.

 

Characters in the second one looks much neater.

From this thread, danmei is 纯爱 but the term danmei was being phased out because of certain sensitivities (political probs).

 

纯爱 is not BL. 纯爱 basically means pure/innocent love - so its basically a romance genre without sex scenes or mature drama. So no backstabbing/revenge plots etc.

 

This makes me fear for Pure Love x Insult Complex

Basically, 言情小说 refers to a romance series. It can include rebirth to H-esque stories to quick transmigration. However, 纯爱小说 refers to a pure and simple romance, usually with a very moving and "romantic" plotline.

It would not be suitable to use this as reference as Pure Love x Insult Complex is a Japanese webnovel.

I wasn't about to continue on, but please look all the way down to the bottom of the Baike page for the term where it states various web novel sites use it as a substitute term. While 纯爱 =/= BL, 纯爱小说 as a term often refers to BL.

Just so we are clear - I'm talking about Jinjiang (http://www.jjwxc.net) categories:
言情 - romance
纯爱 - BL
百合 - GL
女尊 - a genre where women's social status is higher than that of men or their status is reversed (as in a woman is an emperor and has a harem of male concubines and it's normal); matriarchal society
无CP - no couple/no romance

 

Ah, I first used the Baidu forum: 纯爱小说和言情小说的区别, before cross referencing with the top part of the Bike article. I didn't see the extra part at the bottom (since it's quite inconvenient on mobile).... Well, my belief has just been overturned like the table...

Although I do have a question, how does one tell apart which site uses 纯爱小说 as a censor for 耽美?

 

Yeah, actually I saw @Shibb's link to the Chinese thread that talked about 纯爱 before I made my first post. Someone there said most people don't think of BL when you say 纯爱. In fact, I wasn't aware and thought half that thread was trolling the OP and ignored them since I never heard of such a thing before. lol my bad

However, if you're comparing 纯爱 and 言情, most likely you wouldn't think of BL.

@Crystle940 Apparently if the site puts 纯爱 in the genre category, it refers the genre. If it puts it in the sexual orientation category, well...

 

I see many of the big sites use 纯爱 over 耽美. (e.g. jjwxc, Qidian, xxsy, zongheng, etc.) In fact, I can't even name you a platform where the tag 纯爱 means "pure innocent love" and not BL.

My rule of thumb is: If you don't see 耽美 as a category, then just assume 纯爱 refers to BL.

 

All the novels I've seen on JJWXC under 纯爱 are BL. I always stalk that category lmao.
