Close Combat Mage, cuz it was trash right from the beginning to the end (and at all points within), so no chance of dipping.

Short cute romance novels, they usually carry all the oomph from the beginning till the end so they count, right?

I haven't really read any that ever dipped in quality. I've heard people say one novel or another "get's worse", but I felt like they just got tired of it. Why would the author suddenly become a worse writer? Pfft.

If you think the novel gets bad, that's because it was bad from the beginning.

An author doesn't have infinite ideas and inspiration. Most of the times, they don't have much planning behind the story either. So, they eventually just write themselves into a corner and have to forcefully drive the plot

There was Everyone else is returnee, my romcom snafu, slime tensei, mushoku tensei, Tsukimichi, Zero no Maria, etc.

Basically anything that was over before 400 chapters.

Sure, I could understand that. But that's not what happens around here.

To begin with, the novels we read around here aren't exactly overflowing with originality, creativity or inspiration. If the author "runs out of ideas", they can just do what they did for the first 10 chapters: copy someone else. Not sure how they'd run out in the first place after reusing the same idea three hundred times in one hundred chapters, but whatever.

These novels abound with tropes and cliches like that. They're tremendously predictable and don't have extremely complex plots. Authors won't write themselves into a corner because they know sort of where their novel is going when they start it: the same places every similar novel goes. If they lose track of it, they can just casually glance around for "fresh inspiration"... What sets them apart from one another is their own personal spin on the usual tropes, and how well they write the minutia of the story. The dialogue. The character interactions. The MC's thoughts, behavior and actions. The meat between the plot points.

Authors with really good writing from the beginning won't randomly start writing intolerable garbage just to "forcefully push along the plot". The authors who have standards like that were writing that way from chapter one. Readers overlook low quality writing early on because they feel like every novel "starts off good", with a new spin. That freshness fades, however. They start to slowly feel like the minutia of the story is terrible, or that the plot points are too predictable, and come to the conclusion that it "got worse".

Well, it didn't. The novel didn't change at all. The author didn't suddenly drop in IQ or writing skill.

Instead, the reader simply got tired of it.

    one shots :blobuwu:

To me, dips in quality refers to when the translator gets worse at grammar
I don't read novels that I don't like so I don't know about dips in quality.

but in the first place my friend told me my taste sucks (lol):blob_teary:

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and the like were turned into light novels, which were professionally edited and rewritten before being released to the public through a recognized publishing house. most of the time the translators work from the published light novels and not early online versions so I'm not sure those stories count. I can name many professionally published novels that don't go downhill.

most online novels are written chapter to chapter and even the author doesn't know what's going to happen next. several stories on this site would be fantastic after going through the publishing process and having about 1200 out of 2000+ chapters edited out.

the only two that I'm reading currently that haven't gone downhill (yet) are My House of Horrors and Trash of the Counts Family. to be honest, I am expecting them to hit a wall and start going downhill any time now.
also, I like CCG but stopped reading to let some chapters stack up so I can't really comment on its ongoing quality.

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, for me. It uses the same template(?) in every arc, over and over, and stayed true to it's warm, lighthearted, slice of life feel (but also made the story repetitive). It's something I'd go back to just because of that.
