Question What should you do to be a translator?

I want to translate a novel which I like but I’m not sure how to do it. Some of the questions I have are:-
1)I don’t have a website. So, should I post the translations on wattpad or scribblehub or reach out to other translation websites?
2)Does translating normally require permission of the author, if so how to do it?

1) You can do pretty much whatever you want. If you want money, joining a group that promises a nice setup with donations and everything already setup will be a better option, though they'll likely have actual requirements for the work you do.
Otherwise, just wherever is fine. Scribblehub, a wordpress site, google drive folder xd
2) Legally, the answer is yes. But the majority of translations probably don't ask. It's up to you whether you want to try to contact the author and get actual permission.

I think you can use wattpad or just make wordpress site since it's pretty easy.
from the 2nd questions i think most translator doesn't ask the author.

 

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

 

I never heard author have the right to give translation, but Publisher

 

The author can give specific rights. Such as rights to make physical copies(books), right to make movies, right to publish in original language.

The author has to specifically give the publisher the right to translate to another language for the publisher to have authority to sell that right to someone else.

Setting up a Wordpress site is really not super hard at all, and I personally like using it to post translations. As for permission... well, yeah, you're supposed to, but most people don't. Just find a series you like and start translating it! It's a lot of fun, really.

 

Don't use wattpad, sometimes the translation will get taken down. You can use wordpress or scribblehub.
About permission, if you are brave enough then go ahead. But never, ever ask in the website (jjwxc etc) because if the publisher see it the author might get into trouble too. Just find their weibo and ask there. Maybe PM them, that is better.

 

Honestly i am fairly new in tling as well but here are some tips
1-Its best to join a group at first just to gain some experience they r alot of tling grps that r willing to teach tling and plus its fun to be in a grp but u can do wht u want
2- a place to post ur tls u can post it either on wattpad or a wp site its really up to u
3-though this is not mandatory its good to have a discord i would recommend that aswell
4-no u should ask permission from the publisher or author if its a Korean novel but i think in chinese novels u can?

 

If you think starting a site is too daunting, you can just post it on google docs and share the link as view-only. Aggregator sites also can't scrape from gdocs. Then for your translator "homepage," you can just make a Carrd page, where you can link all links to your translations.
