Discussion Why do people dislike harems?

Its becuase what happens is that a harem member typically has a episode the mc needs to save them before something bad happens i.e rape timer then after that episode the harem member gets taken by a higher power which is the next episode, she turns into a entourage that has no clear use except to look pretty and bring trouble or coma state. The females characters will generally lose all personality and only act cute for the mc like a cat. A good harem has conflict and people hating each other or the women being capable of doing their own thing. Thats why mushoku tensei and sevens have great harems whiles something like martial god asura is a bad harem

 

I hate harems for so many reasons.
One, love is all about monopoly. No one wants to be in a lineup, regardless of how great the love interest is.
Two, unrealistic. Statistically, I refuse to accept that every beautiful woman the MC meets will fall in love with them.
Three, the lack of self control and discipline is appaling. You don't have to eat everything you see.
Four, harems give me the impression of a game where everyone wins. What's the point of having anyone's love if like fifteen other people have it?
Every participant gets the trophy? No, thanks.
Five, transfer of microorganisms .

 

Hmm... It's not really the harem part that is hated but how poorly it was executed. Most authors need to flesh out characters and interactions well to make it a good story.

From what i can see, there is several reason why people dislike harem

- Most harem stories have bad plot development

- heroines in harem stories fall in love to easily with mc

- Most of harem stories featured either dense and spineless beta mc or "badass" mc that collect girls like a pokemon

- Most of the heroines don't get any development after being "conquered"

- harem in real life itself isn't as happy or carefree as in the stories

- people like to read a relatable stories, and having a harem of beautiful girls isn't relatable to them in any way

- Most of harem stories have generic plot that are easy to guess

- Most of character in harem stories have one-dimensional personality

- Or they just simply jealous of the mc having a harem, so they just put bad reviews to satisfied their grudge

That's all the reason i can think of right now, as a person who like harem personally i can say that not all of them are like the above, but sadly most of them are, but don't let that be a reason to hate harems, as there is a plenty of good harem stories out there

 

The main reason I dislike harem novels, is the lack of romance and the 1 dimensional of the characters.

 

Also dont forget the obligatory o wow it is a extremely pretty lady with some problems if i solve them she would surely love me for life. I want to see a harem if more ordinary women not defined as once in a century country toppling beauty and having 8 of them all in one small region. Its not even fun when you already know one of them is going to go after the mc. It just gets a bit false when mc says they love them for their personality when they are praised as 10 outta 10. In this aspect womanizing mage does a better job by keeping one of the girls as 2 face

 

Some people think it's annoying how multiple women like a single guy and in some stories fight over him. I'm cool with harems, but within some novels the MC likes all the women so he just decides to lead them on and that kinda irritates me. Also, there's the type of people that dislike nonrealistic novels and a bunch of women favoring one guy doesn't sit well with them.

 

So, as a real life example of having two wives, what is your opinion in thus matter, @prongsjiisan?

 

There are some explanation
1. they are loser in life therefore. They envy those who has lot of girls around them

2. Feminist SJW. Godamn idiot socialist movement

3. A true man who has strong belief in single love.

4. The author is fucking idiot. That can't write good plotlines. That supposedly good harem story became a fucking shit story

5. NTR aka cuckold. Only some M likes NTR.

 

I've never read a good harem-based story, and every 'good' novel i've read with Harem turned any woman that joined said harem into a one dimensional character who's only motivation is to keep the MC's dick warm and have his children. No matter who they were or how interesting their characters were, it's an instant devolve into a walking fleshlight.

It also really undermines how much the MC 'loves' his first wife, when he loves her so much he needs to add 8 more wives because somehow that's how to show you really love a woman: By falling in love with even more women instead of you know, keeping it in your pants like most normal people do when they're already in love with another woman.


So yeah. Harem stories are poorly written, harem subplots are poorly written and undermine the main character who keeps pretending like this is absolutely the last wife i'm going to add to my harem (hint: It isn't). So why would I go out of my way to read them?

 

Most books out there don't have harem relationships for a reason: there are a lot of people who don't like this kind of story because it falls outside of the romantic relationship ideal. Also, most cultures value monogamy and harems infer a certain amount of gender imbalance.

The other main issue is that writing harems well requires a greater degree of writing ability, but most of the authors who use this story mechanic are relative amateurs. And so most of these novels turn out badly because the writers don't have enough talent or experience to pull it off. I actually read quite a few harem novels and most of them are free of the complaints aired in this thread, so they're out there if you look hard enough.

Some good ones do exist, but they're not going to be easy to find on NU. Most of my favorite ones are untranslated.

 

To be honest, I don't really know, I mean those who claim love is single-minded was perhaps doesn't understood the concept of love itself, if love is just about taking fancy of one person, the how about your feeling toward your parents? brothers? sisters? nieces? uncles? aunties? friends? isn't that love too?

 

Because it is a sign of author's laziness most of the time.
Why spend hundreds of chapters developing the backstory of one love interest when you can add a new one every 20 chapters with different hair colors. But all accidentally bump into the protagonist, pressing their chest against him or he accidentally comes across them naked

 

Because It's So Fucking Boring!

 

It is simple math actually, it is hard enough for authors to write good romance between two characters, so of course it won't get any better if you just multiply that number for no good reason.
Personally I hate most harems because they are usually formulaic, I don't like when the number of romantic interests are treated as a selling point rather than as a logical development of the plot.

 

i don't dislike harems per say...but I REALLY HATE harems in a SLICE OF LIFE setting.
because whatever story it is, its always the same old shenanigans...and I HATE IT EVEN MORE when the protagonist is BORING AS HELL...also there will be the supporting friend character who is a pervert and comic relief punching bag...

but ONLY SLICE OF LIFE, other genres like action fantasy...at least there will be some conflict, fighting, politics going on to interest me.

 

There are something we call bad harems, I dislike those in which the girls are just thrown around.

Another reason is people being blinded by today's standards or in many cases...the holy shit they call bible.

2. Is it a good harem, if the waifus help to manage MC's businesses, armies and empires? Because MC is not omnipresent and can't appear everywhere at once?
   
3. What happens if MC has "Batman issues", can't get officially married because of the law and villains will target married waifu with greater intensity?
4. What happens if MC completes the "Conquer Waifu Quest" but needs to continue with "Repeat: Waifu Maintenance/Loyalty Quests"?
