Discussion Why does Fang Yuan of Reverend Insanity makes everyone hate him?

I am still in the beginning of the novel on the village arc so maybe it will get better, but right now it seems Fang Yan makes everyone around hate him for no reason whatsoever. I am totally fine with him being an amoral, ruthless psychopath, somewhat like Leylin from the Warlock of the Magus World. But instead of being a loner, isn't it better to "make friends" with usefull people, or recruit followers in order to achieve his goals better? In real life psychopaths are very very good at socializing and become very successfull CEOs or politicians. But in the novel it seems like Fang Yuan deliberately acts like a pricky asshole to his own detriment.

 

Noone in his clan respects him in the beginning because he has shit aptitude and most with that talent wont achieve anything. So he has to exploit his clan members to get the cultivation resources he needs. If he could get the necessary resources by being "friends" with them he would do it. And later after he leaves his clan and has a decent power base he has no need for friends who could potentially backstab him because he has knowledge about what will happen in the next 500 years

 

I think the biggest reason is that doing so wouldn't return many benefits like not even considering the treacherous GU world, even in our modern world friendship isn't about the monetary benefit ( not in all cases ) but this is exactly what fang yuan seeks considering not only his 'demonic' mindset and his limited time and the enemies after him he had to abandon all courtesies and go straight for power, affecting the interests of a lot of people in the process.
And there is also his belief about life as a weathered person who has been through so many ups and downs and believes that without eternal life, all relations and all achievements are useless as you're gonna die anyway so he always pursues his one and only goal, the eternal life.
If he died in the process, then it couldn't be helped, but he wouldn't regret it as he did his best, but if he achieved eternal life, then he can start to worry about these things as he had all the time in the world, that's his mindset.
And in one chapter ( the one that Lu Weiyin executed a dream path killer move I think it was called three lives reincarnation idk ) it was shown that the fang yuan is not devoid of human emotions, he can love, he can hate, he can be happy, but his iron will and perservation is dead set on pursuing eternal life.

 

Oh, we're talking about early on. From FY's perspective, the village has basically zero long-term value for various reasons and he needs to get strong enough to leave it as soon as possible.

To give vague-ish spoilers about stuff after Vol 1:

There are several points during the series where FY is in a position where he could turn a relatively shorter-term ally / associate into a real friend. The issue is, that although FY is very capable of giving oscar-winning performances of pretty much any role including "your best friend", when the chips are down he just isn't willing to take any kind of loss for friendship. Now, his world is so cut-throat that such choices are sometimes the only way he survives but I like that he still has to deal with the consequences of being so self-centered (also, that other characters show what is lost does have value - not everyone back-stabs their buddies even if it does happen sometimes). Namely, FY can have allies/minions but he mostly ends up eventually setting fire to any true friendship/loyalty flags that get raised. Some of those friendships would have been quite useful to him / would have avoided a lot of trouble... but then again what he burned those flags to achieve often ends up being critically important... sometimes the flag burning is just bad moves though.

EDIT: Although there are people FY helps - massively, in some cases - that's because he personally benefits from them doing well / achieving a certain goal. I'd say the most genuinely heartfelt thing FY does in the novel is...

Not kill a certain individual that has a tiny chance of causing him issues in the future despite him being in a situation where he'd lose nothing by killing them, there would be no consequences, he could easily do it, and the individual in question is unlikely to have any future value to his plans. That doesn't sound like much, but for FY that's definitely a big deal. It's true that he would absolutely try to kill them without hesitation if they had a significant chance of messing up his plans or if he had something specific to gain from killing them, but to willingly accept *any* risk at all in that kind of situation - just because he'd prefer the world continue to have them in it - is unheard of for FY.

 

He gave his clan a chance, he showed them he has more to offer despite his shitty aptitude. However, they still chose to side with his brother and even had the gall to steal the resources meant for him.

 

That is probably because the author made him as a ruthless person, and also technically everyone on the village are weak so he doesn't consider them worth it. But later on, SPOILER(sorry i dont know how to hide the spoiler) he will travel with the genius of the neighbor village, after their villages are destroyed, and this genius was turned into a woman.

First of all, his clan is probably useless to his further goal (eternal life, but before that being a gu immortal) because of their infighting and stuff and he also had to deal with the issue of trust while also being bound down. Although Fang Yuan can deal with being bound, as was seen in the Shang clan (where FY and BNB lie-low), being bound in the Fang clan is seen by FY as not enough benefit, and for it to be benefitable he'd have to do a lot (which is not in his plan) so he deliberately shows a façade of being rebellious to have a legitimate reason to get more resources, and get stronger in a safer way. Later he gets bound, (when he reached level 3 and was promoted as an elder) because he saw enough benefits to do so and how conducive it will be to his next goal (which is leaving the mountain).

 

He has live 500 year to the future.
You see, in early chapter, he is a transmigrator from another world. Most trnasmigrator in another novel use their knowledge/technology in his previous live, so did him. He recited good poem, so every village praise him, even they have high expectation for him. But, after they know he just got C-grade aptitude, they left him. They plot him, everyone give support to his brother who has A-grade aptitude. That has happened in his previous live too. So when he got Gu who can be used to make him stronger (level up his aptitude to level A) but he has to sacrifice his family, he do that.
What you have to remember, in the first live, he is not evil, his hardship as lone cultivator in previous live make it like that.

 

He play well the cards in hand. To make friends is also to male concessions. To befriend is to receive advantages to oneself but also to compromise with others needs.

Now, seeing he doesn’t need to compromise for resources with his knowledge of the future and the things he has access with that knowledge will easily provoke sharing of benefits at least or bettayal at worst, then why bother in play cool?

Surely there’s no need to play cool in his family lands, thus he doesn’t.

Later on the novel, there will be moments to play cool or act nice, and he will do it, until benefits tell them to act otherwise.

Later author will mention many times that gu world is a world where a strong person can singlehandedly fight whole world.
FY goals a not simple and mindless existence and he have no need in friends, family and other useless things because they just will drag him down and work as his weakness.

 

Fang yuan doesn't swim in a small pond. Seriously though, fang yuan act is superb, he even make some believe that's his personality. There is no point to him being close to them when his aptitude is b class, instead he have to find his way for becoming strong and that will make it hard with elders and clan leader around. So him acting like an edgy and being predictable is a bait (i think), it's good when you know someone personality than not know it, they thought he is a depressed person who have his dream crushed and do whatever he wants, which made them unable to think fang yuan in other light, they want him to turn in to a new leaf (join them) by stopping his rebel which means they have already fell for his scheme. they didn't knew fang yuan clearly, they knew the fang yuan that is rebellion, depressed and edgy, but not the real one, but when he became an elder he befriend them and started to use them, though for their case he stopped his rebellion and joined gu yue tribe, so what i am trying to say is, you, my friend, is a victim of fang yuan magnificent scheme (really impressive, his scheme has reached this so far) or i am talking nonsense and didn't understand that part clearly.

 

Firstly, it's because of his past life experiences where he was betrayed again and again to the point he became numb and decided that he will only love and care about himself and no one else, and secondly, he is probably influenced by

You might think that he is being stupid by not being friends with others but as you read the story further, you will understand that his choices were right. After all, the world Fang Yuan transmigrated to is a harsh world where parents might turn against their own children for benefits. There is no need to be friends with others, they might betray you at any time.

 

Rather then hating him his my role model I want to be like him.after reading reverend insanity other novel mc aspirations or goal look childish

 

Nah tbh if he was like " How dare you hurt my friend/subordinate!!!" I would have never read this novel if it was like this tbh. For I feel nothing but utter disgust when evil protagonists acts sweet sure it might make them appear human and all but idc
